1. ## Lobster Traps - How it works & How it is broken.

After spending a ton of time researching and experimenting, I am making this thread to fully explain how lobster works and how broken they are.
This is a follow up to the threads related to how Crab Wall Mounts are useless due to perfect crabs being basically unobtainable.

First of all, all of the top tier baits have been used, which includes, Shrimp, Whizmo and Otherworldly.
The lobster traps were placed in a fresh new undersea world, on bedrock.
My experiments were to check for the following things:
• How deep a lobster trap needs be covered to get a certain range of crab weight?
• Why are 100lb Alaskan Crabs so common?
• Are Perfect crabs possible to obtain?

1. Placing the lobsters on bedrock in an undersea blasted world always gives 1-199lb (I'll come back to the 199 part later). So, how do to get smaller crabs more often? Answer :

4 Columns. Each column has a trap placed 1 water deeper. Using shrimp on the first column, one water deep gets you 1-49lb. two water deep gets you 1-99, then 1-149, 1-199. I haven't bothered to calculate ranges for each type of bait since shrimp would be considered the best, assuming mega-pellet and uranium (if they're even placeable, haven't tried) are the same values than shrimp.
So basically, all you need to do if you want best sized crabs is simply put the traps at least 4 tiles deep into water.

2. Why are 100lb alaskans so common? Turns out it's actually pretty simple, 100lb is the minimal weight you can get for those crabs.

3. The big question, why are perfect crabs impossible to obtain? Well with some research and programming knowledge, it's possible that they've recycled the same mechanism from fishing (where it's impossible to get perfect 200lb without buffs & top tier rods).
The function called "random" for most programming languages takes two values, the included minimum number and the excluded maximum. which means, if you decide to use it without being cautious which is actually common, you end up rolling a number, in this case, which would be, 1-199. You can learn more about this here. If you forget to add the +1, and start at 0, you end up having unexpected random range value returns.
Tldr: Programming mistake very likely.

I really do hope devs are going to fix this, considering how long crabs have been out in the game and also broken by the way.

2. inb4 they say that its possible again

3. How deep should the lobster trap be to get octopus head?

4. 100 lb is definitely common. I got bored and used some shrimp, got a bunch of 100 lb Alaskan King Crabs.

For octopus head, you must be at least using shrimp & as deep as possible, this does include the other items such as Pet Frog. I wasn't able to catch them using the other baits which would mean they are only obtainable if your setup allows you to get at least 150lb sized crabs.

Alternatively it seems that Whizmo Gizmo allows catching 199lb max regardless of how deep the trap is.
There does not seem to be a difference using Otherworldly Baits compared to Shrimp.

I will be testing with Mega-Pellet & Uranium Lure soon.

6. Have u tried using COTD baits

Nope you can't place them in lobster traps.
