    Default July Update - Roots - Dev Diary

    Hello Growtopians!

    Ooh, this is a cool one. Roots is an update we've been excited to add for ages. A little scared, too - after all, the heart of Growtopia's economy revolves around growth, and Roots adds a brand-new dimension to that experience. For those who aren't aware yet, this update is all about planting special new Bountiful seeds in Fertile Soil, growing roots, and then maturing those roots so you can harvest them for lots of gems and XP, among other things.

    On the surface, it's a pretty straightforward update: Bountiful seeds lead to roots, roots lead to root cuttings and rewards, root cuttings lead to higher tiers of Bountiful seeds, and the cycle continues. Behind the scenes, however, there's a wealth of balancing madness we had to take into account with this update, because we wanted to add something that would be competitive with the current farming scene, yet not fully replace it.

    In the end, the goal here is to reward longer-term planning and farm strategies. Because all roots take five plant/harvest cycles to mature, there's a bit more of an upfront cost in terms of time and resources. On the flipside, however, if you're efficient with these cycles and plan things out accordingly, you can make more gems faster. Just how much time you have to invest (both in terms of growth as well as breaking) versus just how much you get as a reward is, of course, the delicate part - if either side of that equation leans too far in one direction, then Roots either becomes unrewarding or waaaay too good.

    As such, when we made this update, a lot of time was spent in Excel, working on balancing projections and long-term progression curves. Then we tested it out. Then we made tweaks. Followed by more testing. And more tweaks.

    What you have today is the result, and remember, there's little to no RNG here - this is one that's purely for the farmers. We think it turned out really well, but as always, we trust you'll let us know either way! I'm already looking forward to your feedback and farms, my friends! May your day be bountiful!
